Teach Us to Pray - Part 4

Created by my dad, Mike Marbut.

TEACH US TO PRAY 4

AREAS OF PRAYER

1. PRAYER OF PRAISE (PSALMS 34:1-3; HEBREWS 13:15)

“Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.” PSALMS 48:1a

Praise is glorifying God for who and what He is and for how this affects you. It is the most appropriate way to enter into His presence. Since its source is God Himself, praise centers on the excellencies, perfections and Holiness of His nature, His character and His role in human affairs.

PRAISE GOD FOR HIS GOODNESS, PATIENCE, LOVE, GRACE, KNOWLEDGE, POWER, HOLINESS, WISDOM, GREATNESS, AND GLORY.

2. PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (PSALMS 116:2; PHILIPPIANS 4:6)

“In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” I THESS. 5:16

Thanksgiving is thanking God for what He has done and for what He is going to do. Since its source is the actions of God, thanksgiving declares positively both that He is the giver of every good and perfect gift and that to the believer every gift is good, perfect, and acceptable.

THANK GOD every day for at least one specific thing in the following areas of life and tell Him why you are thankful.

A. MATERIAL POSSESSIONS (HOUSE, CAR, SHOES, FOOD, ETC)

B. PHYSICAL BLESSINGS (EYES, MIND, MOUTH, ETC.)

C. SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS (FORGIVENESS, PRAYER, JOY, HAPPINESS)

D. PEOPLE (HUSBAND, WIFE, CHILDREN, FRIENDS, MOTHER, DAD, ETC.)

THANKSGIVING IS ONE OF THE INEVITABLE RESULTS OF BEING FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT AND ONE WHO DOES NOT LEARN “IN EVERYTHING TO GIVE THANKS” CANNOT CONTINUE TO PRAY IN THE SPIRIT. IF WE WOULD LEARN TO PRAY WITH POWER WE WOULD DO WELL TO LET THESE TWO WORDS SINK DEEP INTO OUR HEARTS.

BIBLE TRUTHS ABOUT PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING

PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING ARE EXPRESSIONS OF ACKNOWLEDGEMENT, APPROVAL, ADMIRATION, AND ADORATION TO GOD FOR WHO HE IS AND FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE.

1. PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING PLEASE THE HEART OF GOD.

“By Him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to His name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” HEBREWS 13:15-16

2. PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EVERY CHRISTIAN.

“Rejoice in the Lord, O ye righteous; for praise is comely for the upright.”

PSALMS 33:1

3. PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING SHOULD BE LEARNED AND REFINED SO AS TO MAKE THEM GLORIOUS TO GOD.

“O Lord, open my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.” PSALMS 51:15

“Sing forth the honor of His name: make His praise glorious.” PSALMS 66:2

4. PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING MUST BE EXPRESSED TO BE VALID.

“Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom He hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy. PSALMS 107:2

CLASS IV - PAGE 2

5. PRAISE AND THANKSGIVING WILL RESULT IN OTHERS TRUSTING GOD.

“And He hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the Lord.” PSALMS 40:3

RETURNING THANKS FOR BLESSINGS ALREADY RECEIVED INCREASES OUR FAITH AND ENABLES US TO APPROACH GOD WITH NEW BOLDNESS AND NEW ASSURANCE.

THE MIGHTY MEN OF PRAYER IN THE BIBLE, AND MEN OF THIS AGE HAVE BEEN MEN WHO WERE MUCH GIVEN TO THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE. DAVID WAS A MIGHTY MAN OF PRAYER, AND NOW HIS PSALMS ABOUNG WITH THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE.
