Teach Us to Pray - Part 1

Teach Us to Pray 1

A Guide to Effective Communication with God

Luke 11: 1 - 4

(1)And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

(2)And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

(3)Give us day by day our daily bread.

(4)And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prayer is the privilege of access to God. It is a Holy art that must be learned, and the Holy Ghost is the teacher. He teaches us directly and through others.

There are two basic ways in which God communicates with us through the Holy Spirit - - the BIBLE and PRAYER. The BIBLE is God’s love letter to us. PRAYER is God’s WATS LINE for our communication with Him.

George Mueller: “When we pray, we speak to God. Now, prayer, in order to be continued for any length of time in any way than a formal manner, requires, generally speaking, a measure of strength or godly desire; and the season, therefore, when this exercise of the soul can be most effectively performed is after the inner man has been nourished by meditation on the Word of God (Bible reading). This is where we find our Father speaking to us, to encourage us, to comfort us, to instruct us, to humble us, to reprove us.”

TEACH US TO PRAY

PRAYER IS MY RESPONSE

A weak child of God prays only for himself, a full-grown person in Christ understands how to consult with God over what takes place in the Kingdom. We must be more concerned about what is happening in God’s kingdom than in our own life. We need to be ‘kingdom minded’.

I. Prayer Is My Response to the Character of God

As we get to know the God who is, we will naturally respond to him. This response

is called prayer.

1. PRAISE - - Is my response to the person, presence, position, power, greatness,

majesty, and love of God. Psalms 145:3

2. THANKSGIVING - - Is my response to the graciousness of God. Psalms 116:12

and 17 (12) “What shall I render unto the Lord for all His benefits toward me?”

(17) “I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name

of the Lord”.

3. CONFESSION - - Is my response to the holiness of God. “Let us therefore come

boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help

in time of need”. HEB 4:16

4. INTERCESSION - - Is my response to the love of God for all people, especially

those in His family. “Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance; feed them

also, and lift them up forever”. Psalms 28:9

5. PETITION - - Is my response to the power and wisdom of God who is our

Heavenly Father. I ask specifically, and He answers specifically. “If ye then,

being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall

your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him”? Matt 7:11

THE SAVIOUR PLACES NO LIMITATIONS ON THE POTENTIALITIES AND POWERS OF PRAYER IN HIS NAME. HE SAID, “IF YE SHALL ASK ANY THINK IN MY NAME, I WILL DO IT.”

THE POWER OF PREVAILING PRAYER IS UNLIMITED.
